BEECHMONT – William Thomas “Tommy” Neathamer, Jr. of Beechmont, 66, died October 15, 2012. He was born September 3, 1946 and lived in Muhlenberg County his entire life. His parents, William Thomas Neathamer, Sr. and Margaret Hope (Jones) Neathamer, whose deaths preceded his, were teachers at the Drakesboro Consolidated School where Tommy attended high school and enjoyed his years as Cardinal basketball and baseball player and band drum major. They inspired Tommy to become an educator. After graduating from Drakesboro High School, Tommy attended Belmont College before earning his bachelor’s degree and finishing his graduate work at Western Kentucky University. He taught English many years and coached basketball and baseball at Hughes-Kirk High School in Beechmont. He loved his years as a counselor at North Middle High School in the Muhlenberg school system with a total of 28 years of service. He loved his students and the faculty and staff at those schools. He left public education to devote his time to babysitting his granddaughter, the work he considered the most fulfilling of his life. Tommy was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He was married to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Constance Marie “Connie” Mefford Neathamer for almost 50 years. Pop, as his family called him, took great pleasure in being with his family on family vacations, particularly if they yielded a good story or two, or just being together at Kirkwood Lake or at the family home for Sunday dinners. Tommy is survived by his wife, Connie Neathamer; daughter, Beth Neathamer Mohon and granddaughter Nelmarie Hope Mohon of Drakesboro; son William Thomas “Little Tommy” Neathamer, III of Franklin, Tennessee; sister, Rebecca Hope (George Humphreys) Neathamer; brother, Richard Purdy Neathamer; mother-in-law, Margaret E. Mefford; brother-in-law Billy W. (Angela) Mefford all of Drakesboro; and brother-in-law Steven W. (Vickie) Mefford of Belton. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. All who knew Tommy knew him to have a wonderful sense of humor. He loved a good joke or story. He had many interests, among which were documenting the history of Drakesboro, his vintage cars, University of Kentucky basketball, and watching politics. He was proud to have been honored as a Kentucky Colonel. Most importantly, Tommy was an active Christian and a member of the Drakesboro First Baptist Church, where he was a choir member, chairman of the deacons and longtime teacher of the men’s Sunday school class. He truly enjoyed the fellowship with the members of that class. Tommy and Connie shared a strong love for Psalms 91 which affirms that the Lord is our fortress and under the Lord’s wings Tommy has found his refuge. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations in his memory to The Drakesboro Alumni Association for: The Tom Neathamer, Jr. Scholarship Fund, P.O Box 62, Drakesboro, KY 42337.
