Owensboro – Wanda Doris Smith, 82, of Owensboro, died Friday, October 17, 2025, at 6:45p.m. at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Ms. Smith was born May 9, 1943 in Muhlenberg County. She enjoyed flowers and floral arrangements, and carried that into her professional life by becoming a bookkeeper for Welborn Florist. Wanda came from a large, loving family, and in turn became a loving mother and grandmother, taking up quilting and traveling as her hobbies. She was a member of the Owensboro Christian Church, and had a passion for the Cedar Lake Lodge which was inspired by their years long care of her daughter, Kim. This further inspired her to do good in the world where she saw a need for kindness and understanding. She was preceded in death by both parents, Robert and Lois Schroader; her daughter, Kim Slaughter; her sisters, Mary Knight and Irene Welborn; and her brothers, Sherman Schroader, Mitchell Schroader, and Willard Schroader.

She is survived by her daughter, Holly (Michael) Goodwin; her sisters, June (Denzil) Webster, Jane Miller, and Lillian Hamilton; her granddaughter, Molly Goodwin; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Graveside services will be Monday, October 20, 2025, at 10:00a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville with Bro. Leroy Rearden officiating. The staff of Owensboro Christian Church sends our deepest sympathies and will be praying for the family in the days and weeks ahead.

I am a neighbor of Wanda’s. I will miss her so much. She was a very kind and likable person. I talked to her often on the phone. I could tell that she was very weak, and did not feel well, due to her asthma and breathing problems. She would tell me about not feeling well enough to cook. I would send her homemade soup when my granddaughter would make it for us, and other extra food that I had. She appreciated it so much. I know she is celebrating in Heaven with her family, and I know she is so happy to be free of her sickness and I know she is walking the streets of gold with her new body.

Holly, Jane, Lillian, and June, My thoughts and prayers are with you as you lay Wanda to rest. I have lots of wonderful memories being with your family years ago, especially during the holidays! Much love, Deloris Raines

I have been Wanda’s neighbor for 20 years. I am devastated on her passing and will miss her so much. She had such a sweet soft voice and a genuine gentle personality. I will miss our phone talks and our street will be a little less brighter. It’s hard to find good friends today but Wanda was genuine. My deepest sympathy to her daughter and her family in their loss. I will always remember this wonderful lady. May the Lord be with her family in the days and weeks ahead. I know Wanda is in a better place and safe in the arms of Jesus. God Bless!

Our deepest sympathy to Wanda's family at this difficult time. We had the pleasure of meeting her when we would visit my sister, Jane, who lived across the street from her.
