DRAKESBORO – Vernie B. “Red” McFarland, 93, of Drakesboro, died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville with his family at his side. Red was born in Drakesboro on March 26, 1917 to the late Frank and Lora Hines McFarland. He was a member of the Drakesboro Pentecostal Church and was a retired coal miner. Red enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bowling on the Wii and spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nellie Reeves McFarland; a daughter, Wanda Faye McFarland; two brothers, Lee McFarland and Marion McFarland; two sisters, Vonell Roberts and Louise Gidcumb; and a great-grandson, Christopher Hill. Survivors include his three daughters, Gaynell Holcomb of Colorado Springs, CO, Raenell (Henry) Hill of Lincolnton, NC and Brenda Brenneman of Colorado Springs, CO; a grandnephew, Mike Drake, who was like a son to him; 5 grandchildren, Tony (Margaret) Hill of Denton, Texas, Tim Hill of Crawfordsville, IN, Julie(Todd) Reulbach of Mooresville, NC, Jennifer (Eddie) Vanhoy of Shelby, NC, Mike (Rachel) Brenneman of Colorado Springs, CO; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 2:00PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial in Peanut Cemetery in Drakesboro.
