BELTON – Terry Lee Shutt, 77, of Belton, passed away on Monday May 5, 2025. He was born March 8, 1948, the son of Henry and Bertha Shutt. Terry married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Maxberry, on August 26, 1967. They were married for a total of 57 years. Terry was a long-time teacher, coach, and administrator, graduating from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He was then asked to be a graduate assistant in the English Department, and taught English 101 for WKU. Moving to secondary education in the public schools, he taught in the Warren County Public School System for four years, and was named an Outstanding Young Educator in 1974. Terry then returned home to Muhlenberg County, where he taught at Graham High School and coached the girls’ basketball team. He then transferred to Hughs-Kirk High School, the school he graduated from in 1966. During these years in public education, he earned his Master of Arts and Rank 1 and principal certification, grades 1-12.

During his years at Hughes-Kirk High School, Terry performed several duties. He coached the girls’ basketball team to two 10^th District titles. He also coached the baseball team, the girls’ softball team, and in the summer, he coached the Babe Ruth baseball team. The summer program, known as the Hughes-Kirk Playground, provided, under Terry’s leadership, Little League, and T-Ball experiences for students. Following consolidation of the schools, he taught at Muhlenberg South High School, and eventually became Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. Terry closed out his career as Assistant Principal at Muhlenberg South Middle School. He was a life-long member of the Beechmont Church of Christ (formerly the Beech Creek Church of Christ).

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bertha Shutt; a brother, Bobby Wayne Shutt; a niece, Sherri Jones; and three brothers-in-law, Jerry Jones, Bennie Goodman, and Jimmie Maxberry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth Maxberry Shutt; a son, Terry Lee Shutt, Jr. (Dana); granddaughters, Brescia Crick (Brandon) and Jessica Piper (Cody); a great-grandson, Ethan Crick; two great-granddaughters, Brenan Piper and Sadie Crick; a sister, Patricia Jones; sisters-in-law, Gayla Goodman and Regina Shutt; nieces, Samantha Goodman Nasielski and Dawn Goodman; nephews, Lance Shutt, Wesley Maxberry and Eric Jones. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 9, 2025 at 2PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Bro. Barry Silvey officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8PM at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.

Such a loss to Hughes Kirk's family of class of 1966. All loved and treasured Terry's friendship during our years of attending school. I am sorry to hear of Terry’s passing. We are second cousins, I think. My Grandmother Etta Hunt Wood and his Grandmother Sarah Hunt Shutt were sisters. My Dad Herbert Wood and his Dad “Hickey” were first cousins. When I was a little girl I loved to visit Aunt Sarah who told me stories about my Grandmother who died when my Dad was very young. I would then go across the road to visit my Dad’s sister Ada Shelton who lived next door to Terry and Trisha. We lived in Pernod so we didn’t see them very often. Even thought I am older than she is, Trisha may remember me but not sure anyone else will.. I came to Louisville to go to Nursing School and have lived here ever since, Daddy loved to visit with Hickey and would tell me what was going on with Terry and Trisha. He was always impressed that Terry was teaching and coaching. Unfortunately I haven’t seen Terry in many years and didn’t hear about him after my Dad died. From reading his obituary and condolences, I know he was a good man and made an impression on all the young people he taught and or coached. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

I’m truly saddened to hear of Coach Shutt’s passing. I was so fortunate to have had him as both a teacher and a basketball coach. The lessons I learned from him have carried me through life. During my time as a teacher and a coach I have always tried to showed the compassion and support that he always showed us during our time at HK! He was a wonderfully kind person and mentor.

I am so saddened. Mr. Shutt was my all time favorite teacher, mentor and neighbor. My prayers are with the entire family. He was a great man! Heaven gained a sweet angel. May God wrap his arms tight around his family and give them comfort.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Terry Shutt. He was my favorite teacher in high school. He was always positive, happy, encouraging, and caring. My friend Jess and I would play pranks on him! We would tape his desk drawers shut, and he would just laugh! He used to call me Roseola, which he reminded me was a very serious skin rash! He was a kind and dear man, and I will always cherish him in my heart. I am so very sorry that I have not been by to see him. I always meant to, but did not, and for that I have deep regret. I hope he knew how much he meant to me. He made a difference in my life and in the lives of all the people that knew him.

Mr. Shutt taught me in high school at MSHS. He was a very patient and understanding man. Always the professional he never let unruly behavior or nonsense disrupt or distract him from his passion…teaching. I enjoyed his class but more so I treasured his friendship. My condolences. -Clay Watkins

Oh how lucky (we were) to have played for such a kindhearted gentleman! Coach always put others before himself and never failed at being a positive role model. I will forever be grateful for my years under his leadership! May you rest in eternal peace.

Coach Shutt will be remembered as a mild-mannered, yet fierce competitor by those of us who were fortunate enough to play Tigerettes basketball for him at Hughes-Kirk High School. He tolerated our shenanigans with grace and lead us to consecutive district championships, a feat that was not repeated to my knowledge. He and Ruth welcomed us into their home and treated us all like family. They gave us a place to be and a reason to stay out of trouble. Thank you, Coach. Rest in peace.

Terry and Ruth are my 2nd cousins and for as long as I can remember we always would go to their house around the 4th of July for a family cookout and of course I always loved the homemade ice cream. I can remember running and playing as a child and then being able to watch my children and grandchildren run and play. All my memories of Terry are of good things and times had at this cookout. Terry will truly be missed but his memory will live on with my family and all of his family. Ruth you are in my prayers along with all of his family and we are just a phone call away if needed.
