CENTRAL CITY – Rose Hopper, 70, of Central City died Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born March 2, 1953.

Rose Hopper was a wonderful, vibrant, lady who brought joy to so many people in this world. She had a friend network that started where she was from on the tiny island of Yap in the South Pacific and spread across the United States. She met the love of her life Johnny Hopper on Yap where he was stationed while in the US Coast Guard. It was there they married and then moved back to the States. Most of her years were spent with her husband, moving across North Alabama with his job, until they came to their final destination in Central City, Kentucky, where she has been for over 26 years.

Rose was an avid gardener who loved watching things grow. She spent countless hours in her “toy garden” as she called it, pulling weeds and nurturing plants in hopes of a bountiful harvest that she could enjoy with family and friends. Her delicious salsa and lime pickles are well known in every community she has lived in. In addition to canning, she was an excellent chef that attended every gathering with a well-prepared dish. Nobody made fruit salad like her.

Her other great joy in life was spending time with her family. She was a wonderful wife to Johnny for 44 years until his passing in 2018. Their only son Jonathan was her pride and joy. He and his wife Erin gave her three precious grandchildren Jon Michael, June, and Olivia whom she loved to play with and spoil.

The great thing about Rose was that her family went beyond just blood. She had the ability to make all friends feel like family. Her warm smile, helping hand and welcoming conversation captured everyone she met. She is an unforgettable woman for so many. Her thoughtfulness and kind gestures were blessings to everyone that knew her.

Rose was also a passionate Christian of the Catholic faith. She was a devoted member at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Central City, Kentucky. Her commitment to God came before all else. She showed God’s love and mercy through her actions.

She was proceeded in death by her Father, Mother Christina, brothers Apollo and Felix, and beloved husband Johnny Hopper.

Her life will continue to be celebrated by the ones she is leaving behind, her son Jonathan (Erin), and grandchildren Jon Michael, June, and Olivia Hopper.

Funeral Mass will be Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 2PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Central City, KY with Fr. John Ighacho officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from4-6PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Prayer Vigil beginning at 6PM, there will be no visitation Sunday at the funeral home. Dearest Rose was my precious friend since the 1970s. She always called me her first American friend, and I love her dearly, still, and forever will. She lives in my heart, but I will be lost without her presence in this world. She was the best example for us to have God in our lives every day.

When I met Rose and Jonathan 26 years ago I had no idea the impact it would have on our family's life. An absolutely beautiful, dark-skinned woman with a lovely accent and her handsome, perfectly behaved son were difficult to miss at our small St. Joseph's Catholic Church, especially when they sat directly behind us. Only many years later did Rose tell me that she thought my girls were so sweet and Erin in her new coat, turning and twirling when she should have been sitting and listening, was adorable. When she asked Jonathan what he thought he replied, "That little girl needed a spanking. She was wiggling all over the place in Church!" Rose would laugh uproariously retelling of that first encounter. So many memories since that day. Rose, Johnny, and Jonathan eventually graduated from friends to family when Erin and Jonathan married. Those who knew Rose know what family meant to her! She pulled ALL of us into her strong arms and even though she always thanked us for including her, we were the lucky ones. Once that lady loved you it was forever and for everything! She helped plan, work, buy extravagant gifts, and attend every birthday, holiday, shower, and wedding. We gained an amazing blessing when Jonathan and Erin married, we not only gained another amazing son-in-law but Rose and Johnny as well. I can't describe or explain the joy and security of being Rose's friend. Very few people in life love living as she did! Rose would laugh and laugh with you but she could also cry with you and hurt with you. She would dance with you or cook with you or whip someone's --- with you if needed! She loved God, her family, her friends, the ocean, flowers and the soil in which they grew. I guess what made Rose so special though, was she also loved the weeds! She would spend hours outside "pulling weeds" and seeing her progress at cleaning out the flowers or vegetable gardens. She never complained about this work like most of us, she considered it a privilege. What more could be said about someone!

Jonathan, Erin, Jon Michael, June Rose and Olivia, was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom, mother in law and grandmother. I never met her, but had enjoyed her fruit salad many times. My condolence to the family for your loss.

Family, Rose was family to all of us. As my family is on vacation at Gulf Shores this past week, the loss of Mrs. Rose, as all of us called her, was sad to hear. She meant so much to each of us! Remembering her fish she brought to Morgan and Brad’s rehersal dinner, to teaching David how to make fish when we invaded your PCP vacation, to all the dancing at all the weddings. She always told the story of how she was so wet from dancing at our daughter’s wedding. She treated our family as hers and we honored her as another grandmother to our children!! We will miss her cheery laugh and many smiles that occurred at each of our visits. Mrs. Rose will be deeply missed. Love and prayers to all of you!!

Dear Family of Rose, I can’t begin to express to you how deeply sorry I am. Rose was a precious, loving , and caring friend to me. She never failed to look me up anytime she came to Walmart. Her infectious laughter and loving words of wisdom, encouragement, faith, and love for not only her family but me as well are going to be missed terribly. Jonathan, I and my family were numb with the news of rose's passing. She now walks with our savior and angels celebrate her life in Heaven. Indeed she was a diamond whose glow enveloped everyone she met. Her fig jam, cherry preserves, and homemade pancakes were amazing! My Mother, Joyce Rudolph loved those pancakes; grateful Rose took time to share them with her! We send our heartfelt condolences to you and your family, praying for strength, comfort, and peace. There are so many memories but my favorite is when we would go to the amish farm to get our canning tomatoes she was always so sweet to the children on the farm .Then we always had go by the lilly farm on way home we had so much fun on our trips I will always remember her lived her so much

Jonathon, so sorry to hear about your mother. She was one of a kind! Always had a smile and her personality just glowed with kindness and concern for those around her. Everyone loved Rose! Cherish the memories.
