In 1960 at the age of 32 he entered Indiana University, where he earned degrees in mathematics and education. He taught high school mathematics for two-year stints in New Albany, Indiana; Tonopah, Nevada; and Nogales, New Mexico, while concurrently working summers to earn a master’s degree in mathematics at Murray State University. In the late 1960s, Mr. Divine became a teacher for U.S. Department of Defense schools overseas, teaching successively at American military bases in Germany, Japan, and the Philippines. He earned a Ph.D. in education from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila in the 1970s and retired from teaching in 1983. In retirement he lived mostly in Nashville, Tennessee, and indulged a variety of interests, supporting democracies in South America; co-founding and serving as president of the Tennessee Hemlock Society; teaching countless ballroom dance classes; and founding, funding, and serving as the first chairperson of the Divine Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation that is today providing college scholarships to descendants of the extended Divine-Vincent family.
