GREENVILLE – Michael Lewis Jones, 68, of Greenville, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Saint Joseph East Hospital in Lexington, KY. Mike was born on December 19, 1954 to Alex and Sylvia Jones. He graduated from Muhlenberg Central High School in 1972.
Mike is survived by his three daughters, Jessica (Matt) Croley, Laura Jones, and Sylvia (Travis) Johnson. He was a very proud Papaw to Eli, Kingston, and Madeline Grace Croley, and Noah and Vivian Johnson. He is survived by five siblings, Faye Blair, Hilda (Jim) Quisenberry, Betty Conkright, David Jones, and Charlie (Linda) Jones as well as countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews which he adored. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Day Jones, in 2019, as well as his parents Alex and Sylvia Jones, siblings Gwyneth McKinney, Ray Jones, and Dallas Jones.
Mike took great pride working in the coal industry alongside his brothers and the extended Jones family. He worked nearly 30 years underground until he underwent surgery for his cancer. He spent the next 10 years above ground, loading barges and moving coal. Mike was a hard worker, but he made the most of his time off boating and horseback riding. His love of cars started with racing in his younger years and continued throughout his life. He could always be found in his shop meticulously maintaining his toys and detailing cars for family and friends. After his cancer surgeries, he spent more and more time in Lexington with his grandchildren. Papaw was happiest with a lap full of giggling grandkids, reciting the Big Bad Wolf or watching his favorite movie, Toy Story.
