CENTRAL CITY-Mary Ellen Batsel, 91, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at Hermitage Care & Rehabilitation Center in Owensboro. Born Jan. 18, 1919, in Bevier Cleaton in Muhlenberg County, she was the daughter of the late Volley Fortney and Mary Susan Drake Fortney and was also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Paul Wayne Batsel; and by three sisters and four brothers. She lived in Central City and at Lake Malone most all her life. She was a homemaker while raising her three children and later completed cosmetology school in Owensboro and became a beautician. She served as president of the Logan County Homemakers for 35 years and has been a longtime active member of First Baptist Church in Central City until her illness prevented her from attending. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Patricia Ray Key and husband Bobby of Central City; a son, Anthony Wayne Batsel and wife Vronah of Forest, Va., a daughter, Janice Elaine Powell and her husband, Charles, of Hopkinsville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City, with the Rev. Bob Lowery, pastor of First Baptist Church, and Dr. Johnny Godwin of Gallatin, Tenn., officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
