John Darwin Houghland BEECHMONT — John Darwin Houghland, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, following a brief illness. He was born June 10, 1922, in Tilden, Ill., to parents John Joe and Martha West Houghland. Mr. Houghland was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps on Midway Island in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a retired coal miner and member of UMWA. Mr. Houghland was a life member of VFW Post 10641 of Marissa, Ill., and Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge No. 842 in Beechmont. He was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 489 in Drakesboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Louise Ruester Houghland; his daughter, Sue Ellen Houghland; and brothers Leo Houghland, Maurice Houghland and Marvin Houghland. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John Lynn and Deborah Johnson Houghland of Beechmont; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Dr. Stephen John and Rhonda Morgan Houghland of Louisville; and granddaughter Sarah Lynn Houghland of Denver. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Marissa (Ill.) Cemetery.
