I just found this today while trying to find out where John and Susan were these days. I have not kept in touch over the years (probably 20 years) but I wanted to try and touch base with them. I can not believe that John has passed, he was one my best frends when we lived in Madisonville. Susan, I am truly sorry for your and Sarah's loss. John was one of the best people I have ever known and he touched a lot of lives in a positave way. He is in a better place now and this earthly world was a better place with him in it. David Pamplin

I cant believe its been almost two years. John was a dear friend of my family's. He brought me out of a very dark time in my youth. He was a wonderful man, and I am a better person for knowing him. My last memory of him, is seeing him sitting in one of the pews at my church on my wedding day. He gave me a hug, told me he was proud of me, and wished me all the best in life. I told him thank you for coming, for believing in me, and for being there for me, like no other had before. I will live and miss him every day, but I know heaven is a much better place with him there.
Debbie McClure left a message on May 14, 2011:
We lived next door to John and Susan for a short time while we were pastoring a church in Madisonville. John and my husband became fast friends and he was one of the examples that caused my husband to enter into a career of law enforcement. John and Susan opened their home to us on more than one occasion and treated us like family. I am sorry to have found that John had passed. He was a wonderful Christian example of a Godly man. Our hearts go out to Susan and the kids.

Too many cookouts and long talks to mention. I hated that he was ill and am sad that he is gone. However, I know he is happy and healthy where he is now.

My first memory of Officer Holt is when he came to our Kindergarten class in 1988 at CTK and put me in handcuffs because the other kids voted me the "baddest kid in class." I also remember him giving a tour of the police station for one of our classes and allowing us to look at his cruiser. I will never forget Officer Holt because he saved my life in the 8th grade when a necklace became locked around my neck tightly and I was having a hard time breathing. When I told him I couldn't breathe he didn't panic, he kept his cool which kept me from hyperventilating. He managed to find a set of bolt cutters and cut the necklace from my neck. If it wasn't for him there's a chance I wouldn't be here today. Thank you for everything you did Officer Holt, you were a great Officer and I'll never forget you.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Think it only fitting that I post this, the day of John's funeral: "The Golden Gates stood open, God saw you needed rest. His garden must be beautiful; He only takes the best."

Susan we are so sorry for your loss. John was a great human being and friend. I don't think I ever saw him in a bad mood. I will never forget your kindness when Chris and I had our accident on south main. It meant alot to me. Words cannot express how sad we are right now because we have lost such an outstanding human being who did so much for the youth in our community. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

We are so sorry for the loss of a great man and a wonderful role model and 'connection' to our young people through his work as a DARE officer. We appreciate John so very much. He touched many lives - young and older.

We are all so lucky to have experienced John, his work, his friendship, and his sense of humor! We will celebrate his life, pray for his family, miss his mischief, but look forward to the day we'll see John and Sarah in Heaven as they play with Katie and Hawthorne!
Niki Carroll Norman left a message on June 9, 2010:
He was such a good role model. I remember him coming to the school and teaching us about drugs and then he would eat lunch with us. We always looked forward to him coming. Our DARE graduation had a 60's theme. We had so much fun lip syncing to "Leader of the Pack" and others. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

My mom worked in a special needs class at Hall St school years ago, they had a dare program and one the students that had CP wrote Officer Holt a very touching and sincere note, I remember while it was being read Officer Holt teared up, I will never forget that, he was a great man and he truly cared about those children.

Please accept my sympathy. We were active in the Kentucky DARE Association for many years together. John was a dediated, loyal and compassionate man who poured his life into others. Be comforted to know that John's faith was real, and his trust and commitment to Jesus Christ has brought him eternal rewards.

We're going to miss you John. You not only touched the children you taught directly, you have also touched thousands of other students throughout the United States by passing along your skills while training other police officers to become DARE Officers. Your time spent as a DARE Mentor Officer was well appriciated by the officers you trained as well as by the other members of the Kentucky DARE Training Team. While we may be forgotten in time, the values you passed on with your teaching will last forever and be a true testament to the value of your life here on this earth. John, I'm sure GOD has been holding a very special place in his kingdom for you. You are loved by more people than you can imagine. I find it fitting that the words I have to type into the "captcha" box on this web page to post this message are "elementary" and "tenant". You lived to teach. Thanks John.

John was a friend and great supporter during my 17 years in Madisonville. He always had a smile and a positive outlook on every situation. The influence he had on the kids in and around Madisonville will be felt for generations to come. It is my prayer that the family know that they may have lost the physical presence of John but his legacy will certainly live on..

Steve and I are so sorry to hear about John. We first met him when he approached us to help sponser his Dare program. We owned Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville and I think we helped every year John asked us. He was so passionate about helping and saving these kids, we knew we had to be a part of it. I can only imagine how many young lives he touched. John always had a smile and kind word when we would run into him about town. He will be missed and we will keep you all in our prayers.

I loved the stories he would share with me. He always could bring a smile to my face. Even that one time when I hit that mail box and he came to file the report he was more worried about me than the mail box I felt so dumb about hitting it. He just laughed and said it can be replace you can not. Officer Holt I will miss you and thank you for all the great stories and for just take the time to my a 17 year kid feel better about hitting the dumb mail box.

I was saddened to hear of the loss of such a great man. He was definitely a role model in our community in many ways, particularly with the DARE Program and the work he did in our school system. His impact will forever be felt, and missed! My thoughts and prayers are with you in the days to come. Take care!

Officer Holt will forever be a great memory in our family. I worked with Officer Holt for 3 1/2 years at the Madisonville Police Department, he was a great officer and friend. My mother worked in the cafeteria at Earlington Elementery and she loved to cook Officer Holts favorite breakfast for him. My daughter Olivia had him as her DARE teacher at Earlington Elementary, she will always have fond memories of him. Officer Holt has touched so many childrens lives in Hopkins County in a very positive way, you all should be very proud of your husband, father, and brother. His passing will be a great void in our community. My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. My God comfort you and hold you all tight.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

When sad news is heard, one wants to run and hide Hoping to relieve, the pain felt from inside. The mind races around, to make sense of it all But quickly replaced, as I start to recall The antics we pulled on all of our friends, A smile on my face I remember them, then DARE classes you had, the knowledge you shared You showed all the kids, that you truly cared. It wasn’t just your job, but your mission in life To save those you could from drugs and the strife, Caused from abuse, substances misused. The graduations we planned and as they grew near We shared lots of laughter; we shared a few tears. When asked if you felt discouraged, by increased numbers of drug users Takers of pills and alcohol abusers Without even a second you answered and smiled, “My job is done if I save only one child.” Your work here completed, you’ve gone Home to rest And Heaven is gaining, one of the best!
