CENTRAL CITY – Elza Tommy Gray, Jr., 88, of Central City, died Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 9:24PM at his home. Mr. Gray was born December 25, 1929, in Muhlenberg County. He was President and Co-owner of A & G Egg Farm, and a member of First United Methodist Church in Central City, He was a member of the Kentucky Poultry Federation and was a Kentucky Colonel. In 1951, he signed with the Detroit Tigers as center fielder. The night before leaving, he lost his arm in his winter job with the I.C.R.R. Tommy set several records with the Detroit Tigers farm club. Later in life, he started A & G Egg Farm. In 1994, after selling his business to Cal-Maine Foods, he and his wife Gerine enjoyed their retirement with their motor home travels throughout the United States. Tommy was inducted into the Kentucky Poultry Federation Hall of Fame, and in 2017 became a member of the Muhlenberg County Sports Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerine Gray; parents Elza and Geneva Gray; brother John William Gray; and sister Jane Ewing. He is survived by his sons, Tommy Joe (Norma) Gray of Central City and Eddie Lee (Cheryl) Gray of Bremen; step-son Dicky (Jackie) Chapman of Greenville; step-daughter Linda (Kenny) Francis of Greenville; grandchildren Scott Francis, Jason Chapman, Marsha Gray Laufenberg, Jeff Gray, Teresa Chapman Vincent, Chris Francis, Julie Gray, and Kevin Gray; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday, June 18, 2018, at 11:00AM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with Rev. Tom Eblen officiating, assisted by Paul Moore. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
