OWENSBORO – Donald F. Garrett, Sr., 77, of Owensboro went to meet his heavenly father on Thursday, December 19, 2024 with his family at his bedside at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro. He was born on January 25th, 1947 to Oscar and Gladys (Harper) Garrett in Muhlenberg County. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald “Spanky” Garrett, Jr., brothers Bobby Garrett, Oscar Lee Garrett, Douglas Garrett, and Roger Dell Garrett, and sisters Glenda Garrett and Anna Toomey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Sandra (O’Bannon) Garrett, daughters Dr. Kristy (David) Chappell, Holli Walters (Jerrin Wells), grandchildren Chandler Wells, Garrett Wells, Presley Garrett, Cooper Garrett, Kelli Walters, Ty Chappell, Chloe Goins, and Alex Sorrels, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Don had many roles throughout his life. He was a Kentucky State Trooper and is a former mayor of Central City. He worked as a diesel mechanic at several coal mines. He also did independent carpentry and construction work. He was an active member of the Muhlenberg County democratic party for many years and served as chairman. He was Water Commissioner in Bremen for several years. Don was a faithful member of the Bremen Masonic Lodge #596 and had many roles in leadership there.
He was a faithful servant of The Lord and was active in several churches through the years, serving as youth minister, deacon, and many other roles. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Greenville and had recently moved to Owensboro and was attending Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Sorgho. He was a graduate of Drakesboro High School.
His favorite role was that of being “Pappy” and spoiling his grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family and friends and always had stories to share. He was passionate about fishing and Kentucky basketball. He could build or repair anything and he was always eager to help anyone in need. He touched many lives in his 77 years on earth and will be missed more than words can say.
Funeral services will be Sunday, December 22, 2024 at 1PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Bro. Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
