The telephone call came in the morning after the November, 1994 national election. That’s the one in which then-Speaker of the US House Tom Foley unexpectedly failed to win re-election to his Washington 5th District seat, turned out by a political novice. “Hello,” I said into the phone. “John,” came that familiar southwestern Kentucky drawl, “what did you people out in Washington do to my good friend Tom Foley.” That was David Simpson in a nutshell, always finding the humor and absurdity in life. He didn’t suffer from dementia; he had developed “selective memory.” David was a great husband, father and grandfather; he also was the best brother-in-law one could hope for. He had an innocent way of catching you off guard if you didn’t listen closely. David once asked how “you folks out in Washington” (state) pronounced Kentucky’s capitol — Looeeville or Lewisville. Without thinking I replied, “Looeeville.” “Funny,” he said, “we Kentuckians pronounce it Frankfort.” Rest in piece my friend, until our next meeting.

I will always smile when I think back on learning how uncle David taught the fish to “jump rope” in the back pond. This city kid was amazed at that idea. I love you deal uncle. Thank you for all of the joy and laughter you shared with the world.
