GREENVILLE – Custer “Rocky” Cornett, Jr., 87, of Greenville, departed these earthly confines on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 8:05PM at Belle Meade Nursing Home, to be with his heavenly father, departed family, friends, and other Christians. Mr. Cornett was born July 13, 1924 in Leslie County, KY. He was a retired commercial artist and member of Second Baptist Church in Greenville. He was a US Army veteran, serving during World War II, and a member of DAV and VFW. He was preceded in death by his father, Custer Cornett Sr.; mother Susan Spencer Cornett; and several brothers and sisters. At the age of 16 he joined the U.S. Army, serving six years. He served during World War II as Staff Seargent Demolition Specialist. He was detached on loan from the U.S. Army to the 52nd Nationalist Chinese Combat Division serving in Burma, Mongolia, French Indo China, and China. He received the Chinese War Memorial Medal, the highest honor ever awarded a Foreign Nationalist. He also received several U.S. medals of honor. Mr. Cornett attended school in Eastern Kentucky and also the University of Wisconsin. He was a man of many talents: a commercial artist, lamp designer and maker, and also an antiques dealer. Survivors include his wife, Lynelle Sparks Cornett; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday, July 29, 2011 at 11:00AM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, officiated by Rev. Bob Thurman and Dr. Ray England. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
