I met Michael when I was 15 and he was 16. Michael was legal to drive I was not,but he felt I needed some pre-legal driving lessons so here is my memory just one of many.We were in his dad's car which would now be called a hoopty, well we were in a small town and an even smaller side street yep you know it had to go bad,a non experienced driver and a big car, bad news. There were cars parked on both sides of the street and I was to go between every one of them, well quite soon I was scraping cars on both sides and my Dad's words were ringing in my ears if you mess up fess up so I started stopping, well Michael was not of the same mind he's yelling go go go don't stop. You guessed it I floored it and took the left turn just about on two wheels tore up I was, but I never was told by him again that I needed to practice.Michael was really surprised when he found out I got my drivers license driving in a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle and a big old four speed transmission at that.just one of my memories of Michael wish he could 've stayed until he was 100.

I did have the priviledge of knowing Mike. He was a good friend of my husband and we shared a lot of good times. He was always a gentleman and was the first to compliment you on something he knew you were insecure about. He was quick to do a dish, feed a pet or do anything that would help a friend out. He would stay at our home on the weekends but he made sure that he was up and home on Monday mornings to pack that granddaughter to school. He was so proud to be "Gramps"! What a wonderful person he was and I have no doubt he is now in Emerald City waiting on the rest of us to take up the journey. God bless his family.

Dear Duvall Family: I did not know Mr. Duvall, but like others that have written before me, his obituary touched my heart. All too often, we as a human race, get so wrapped up in so many insignifcant things; that we tend to forget that we are only on this earth for such a short time. Everyone has their own Yellow Brick Road and it is up to us to travel it as best we can. Thank you, Mr. Duvall, for giving us this "gift". Hopefully, we can take it and move on our down our road, being better people for you bringing to light what is most important in life....our family and friends. I hope I have the courage to be as brave as you were during my last days. I am sure this obituary is a great comfort to the family. My heart and prayers go out to his "munchkins and flying monkeys". Peace.

Thank you for your service, Michael, and for making a perfect stranger smile this morning..even after you've gone.

Dear Nancy, Jerry and family, Hope I am not repeating myself but something happened with the 1st note I started. Must have been Wicked Witch interference. Anyway, I was so sorry to hear about Mike but had to celebrate thru the sadness reading his autobiographical obituary. How Doobie-like! Nancy, you and I got to be friends working at the Dairy Queen in high school and the first time I met you, Jerry, you, Mike, Craig Harmon and Louie Williams were out there. I think it was right before Mike left to go into the service. Much more innocent times, back then....But I do remember Mike coming back home and telling the story about how his St. Christopher medal saved his life in Nam. I was always in awe of that story and it was one of the first times I knew first-hand of divine intervention. I've heard stories like that since and always thought of Mike. He was one of the first friends I had that was a veteran and over the years I have become very grateful for his sacrifice, along with that of so very many others. Where would we be without that blanket of protection that they insured? He was also one of the first serious golfers I knew. I thought he was quirky about it at that time, but being married to a serious golfer, I realize it is a debilitating disease! Although my path hasn't crossed with Mike's in many years, I still have good thoughts and memories of him and what a good guy he was. I know he always had a soft spot for his sister, Nancy. And although I don't see yall often, I still consider you and Jerry both as good friends. I am sending you hugs and prayers during this time and wishing your whole family God's Comfort and Peace and many good memories through your healing. Love, Susan Dorris Houck

It was purely by accident my mother showed me Mr. Duvall's obituary today. She thought it was special and thought to show it to me. I tried reading it out loud to my husband and father, but I was too choked up to do it. He had me from the very first sentence. I did not know Mr. Duvall & feel like I missed out. What a special man and talented writer he apparently was. I've read his obituary a few times tonight, and I've cried every time. I brought it home to keep in my box of "special things." To think an obituary from a man I did not know could touch me so deeply, but it truly has. He seemed so happy. So content with the life he lived. I hope I can look back one day & say I was like that, too. I think that's why I'm going to keep this obituary -- as a reminder of how to live with satisfaction & abandon. I'm so sorry for your loss. He obviously was one in a million. But I'm sure he's looking down at you from his Emerald City with a great big smile.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

To the Family of Michael E. Duvall Today it was my great fortune to be sent the last words of Michael E. Duvall from my sister in Cambridge, Ontario. You might ask how she received them and I would tell you that her daughter in Owensboro sent them to her. She herself read Gramp's beautiful and creative write-up and like the game of domino's, they ended up with us. Even though I was born in '56 which would make my teen years in the 70's, I gravited to the "Peace, Love and Happiness' scene and was a hippie at heart. Still today, I find a comfort in clothing and music from that era. I feel that Gramps represented that beautiful spirit that is truly hard to find these days amongst the cell phone texting & calling that people get so wrapped in. After reading Michael's words, it should not take long for anyone to see how much he loved his family and those connected. Definitely there was a writter trapped inside of him. My sister Kathy's words were, "He must have been a very creative soul." There is no doubt in my mind that he was and that he will be missed for that definite twinkle in his eye. I really do hope he goes to the Emerald City and meets the Wizard. I hope all of us do. Michael Duvall will be missed by more people than you know. He will be missed by this world. Even though you were unaware that this would be shared with us, I would just like to say thank you from Kansas (just thought I'd add that touch). As I click my Ruby heals together and close my eyes, my wish is for my Dad to stumble across your Gramps who had that same twinkle and was a great story teller. Lots of Love is going your way and please know we are thinking of you. Janet, Kathy & Sherry OOOXXX

I want to express my condolences to Kim and all of Mike's family. Mike was what I call an anchor friend. An anchor friend is someone you know you can depend on regardless of whether you retain contact. Sometimes just knowing they're out there is enough to keep you from drifting out to sea. The first time I saw Mike we were standing outside a church in Owensboro, Kentucky taking a break, burning a few butts, while on a walk to Emmaus, sometime in the early eighties. He had shoulder length hair and was wearing a pair of bright yellow shoes. It was obvious that he had a good sense of humor if not the best fashion sense. Over the course of the weekend I discovered that we had a lot in common, not the least of which was we were both seeking help to remain drug and alcohol free. We soon became friends as well as our wives and children. However it wasn't long before it became obvious that we were not a good influence on each other. While on a trip to Evansville, Mike and I decided we would have a few drinks for old times sake. By the time we got home I was not sure how we got there. The next day Kim called and told me that Mike and I were not allowed to play together anymore. Obviously the right decision for someone who loved her husband and wanted to keep her family together. I don't regret the fact that when the two of us were together there wasn't an adult in the room and we had to be separated but I do regret that I never made an attempt to reconnect over the past twent-plus years. However I believe if I had reached out to him for any reason he would have gladly been an anchor for me. I think anyone who know Mike would understand what I mean. Although our time together was short and now decades ago my life is richer for having known him and will be until I too find myself "somewhere over the rainbow way up high". Good-bye Mike, my thoughts are with you, Kim, and all of your family and friends.

I did not know Mr. Duvall, but reading his obituary, I am sorry I did not. I grew up in Livermore-Calhoun Kentucky, the granddaughter of the Herbert and Erma King and the cousin of Granvil Clark, Jr. Reading about Mr. Duvall reminded me of the life I had as a youngster in Kentucky. He reminded me of how much I was loved and how much I shared with my grandparents and other relatives on their farm. My Uncle Granvil Clark was my inspiration; he was my friend, my counselor, my path to the Church and my life based on my love of God and Jesus, and my best teacher. I hope Mr. Duvall had a chance to meet my Kentucky relatives as I know how much they would have admired each other. My sympathy for your loss of such a wonderful human being. Heaven will be a bit brighter because he now calls it home.

I am going to cut it out and keep it. Michael must have been a wonderful man and I am sure his family and friends are going to really miss him. I contacted a relative of mine, Barry Duvall, to see if we were related and he said distantly. He lives over in Ky somewhere. I contact him by email. I think you should find comfort in the fact that Michael seems to have found peace with the idea of dying and was looking forward to seeing his family in heaven. What a wonderful legacy he has left for his family. God bless you all!!! Nancy Shelton. P.S. My mother was Barbara Duvall the daughter of Lydona and Harvey Thomas Duvall. Mom moved to Indiana when she was 6 wks old.

I came to know Mike through my cousin Jerry Clayton, if memory serves me right (and sometimes it doesn't). We were kind of a gang I guess. Me, Jerry, Tommy Williams, Lewis Williams, Dale Fox, Jimmy Childers, Craig Harmon, and sometimes Craig's little brother Steve, and of course Mike. There were lots of good times and a few bad times, I'll not dwell on the bad times and tell you of a good time. One night we were camping out in Nisbet's Woods (where RMC is now), we had a kind of fort in the hollow base of an overturned tree just beside the railroad tracks. For some reason, Craig couldn't come out until way after dark, and being slightly afraid of the dark, we had to send someone to bring him to the camp sight. Mike was elected, BUT we made a plan that when Mike and Craig came down the tracks, at a certain point, Dale and I would jump up and scare the crap out of Craig. SO with Jerry, Tommy and Lewis waiting at the camp, Dale and I waited until just the right time, jumped up and started screaming like something wild. Craig (the scared one) just stood there and looked at us like we were some kind of idiots ....Mike (who was in on the deal) started screaming, jumping up and down, and waving his arms like he was trying to fly ...Later when we asked him what the problem was, he said "I knew what was going to happen, I just didn't know when ...." Now thinking about that, I guess that is kind of a lesson for life....You know what's going to happen, you just don't know when.... Mike and I kind of lost touch for the last several years, Oh I knew what was going on, by talking to mutual friends, but now that it is too late, I wish that I could talk to him one more time and just say thanks .... I didn't have the honor of meeting Mr Duvall but after reading his delightful obit today I have to say what a joy he must have been and how very sorry I am for your loss. Thank you for sharing what I am sure were his own words with us, I know it had to have a considerable monetary cost involved. Just wanted his family to know what a blessing it was to read.

Whoever wrote this obiturary must have captured this man's life perfectly. By the time I'd gotten to the "cowardly lion" part I was in tears! Though I never got to meet this man, his life obviously touched so many! May the Lord bring you His peace during the days ahead.

Kim: What a Obituary!!!!Sounds just like him, he sure did fight a big battle he was a HERO. Probably not a dull moment around your house, knowing Mike as I knew him. And yes he was a very good golfer, I was working @ the course when he got his (hole in 1). How could I forget that day, Mickey was so proud of Mike, he was one of the few that got to celebrate and had bragging rights for getting a hole in one. I know that Mickey and Mike are talking golf now.!!! May God Bless you and your family during this sad time. Janice

I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Duvall. I wish that I had. He seems like he was a wonderful man. I know that he will be missed by all that knew and loved him, I am sure that there are many. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. May the comfort of knowing that he loved you so very much, and that he is waiting until it is your time to join him and others that have gone before, bring you peace. I also pray that my loved ones that are in heaven too get a chance to meet him there. My brother-in-law, Tommy Teague would just love him. I will carry this little look into the life of a wonderful man from now on. May the love he shared with all of you get you through this difficult time. May the peace of God shine down on you as you continue your journey till you meet again.
