Golda Mae Harris, “Goldie” to all who knew her, was born on July 30, 1929, in Beechmont, Kentucky, to the late Bessie Lear and Seymore McElwain. She was the youngest of seven siblings – Herman McElwain, Arlo McElwain, Barney McElwain, RB “Pete” McElwain, Icy Wester, and Sarah Wester. She joined them in heaven on September 29, 2025, passing peacefully while surrounded by her remaining family.
Goldie married the love of her life, Samuel “Woodrow” Harris, on May 18th, 1946. They shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in July of 2000.
They were blessed with one daughter, Sammie (Stephen) Moss of Owensboro, Kentucky. Goldie cherished her three granddaughters: Tammie (Mack) Marett of Owensboro, Lori (Melvin) Houk of Eddyville, and Stephanie “Nikki” Moss of Owensboro. She also treasured her two great-grandchildren, John Bryant Houk (Danay) of Norman, Oklahoma, and Kaylin Bess Davis (Taylor) of Marion, Kentucky. In recent years, her four great-great-grandchildren – Braylee Mae, Emerson Jane, Leighton Bryant, and Edie Bryar – brought her enormous pride and joy. Several nieces and nephews were also beloved to Aunt Goldie, as was her dearest friend and caregiver, Mary Barnett.
Goldie was a retired nurse who found great fulfillment in her work. She spent most of her career at Daviess County Hospital, where she cared for patients with dedication and skill, specializing in psychiatric care. After retirement, she and Woodrow relocated to Lake Barkley, where they embraced lake life spending their days together boating, fishing, and porch sitting.
