CENTRAL CITY – Carl Thomas “Carlie” Mitchell, 87, of Central City, died Thursday, March 17, 2016, at his home. He was born October 8, 1928, in Muhlenberg County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Eolia Mitchell; and sister and brother-in-law, June and Jack Spalding. He worked his whole life. When he was a youngster, he picked up rags, glass, scrap metal, and anything else he could sell, and traded livestock. He worked for the IC Illinois Central Railroad from January 1948 until he retired from the ICG Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1986. He was a Korean War veteran, where he served in the Air Police. He always had a second job; in the 1950’s and 1960’s, it was logging. In 1969 he started buying, selling, and trading tractors and machinery. In April 1974, he and his son Joe started Carl Mitchell and Son Implement, which he was very active in until 1990 when he sold out to Joe. He continued trading until health stopped him in 2009. He loved buying and selling, and was told he was so good “he could sell ice to an Eskimo”. Most who knew him commented on his remarkable memory and details from recent to 40, 50, 60 years ago. He loved pulling pranks and having fun, and will be missed by many. He was a member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church. He loved being involved in politics and worked hard for those he thought were right for whatever office, and worked hard against those he thought were not right for it. He wanted to help others, but not be in political office himself. However, he served on the Central City City Council for a short time. He is survived by his wife, Jackie Mitchell; son, Joe G. and Teresa Mitchell; step-son Tim and Darla Malueg; step-daughter Vicki and Wallace Slinker; grandchildren Andrea (BJ) Durall, Tracie (Brandon) Miller, and Scottie (Crissy) Mitchell; step-grandchildren Julia Malueg, Sabrina (John) Scott, and Scotty (Lindsey) Slinker; and great-grandchildren Dylan, Matty, and Tanner Durall, Bailey and Abby Miller, Halie Sheperd, Travis Sheperd, Cody Morgan, Raleigh Mitchell, Julia Malueg, and Levi and Sawyer Slinker.
