GREENVILLE – William J. “Bill” Rogers of Greenville rejoined his parents on Friday, January 18, 2019, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Withers Rogers of Powderly; two sons, Steve (Betsy) Rogers of Raleigh and their sons, Wes and Ian, and Jon (Pennye) Rogers of Greenville and their children, Jonathan (Micah) Rogers and Sierra (Josh) Winfield; and one great-grandson, Kaleb Winfield. Bill was born August 17, 1923, to O.F. and Cora Rogers of the Tar Hill area near Rockport. Bill was a coal miner, farmer, and lover of life. He said to live one day at a time and enjoy each day as it is a gift. He loved ballroom dancing and going on walks with his German Shepherd dogs as well as Harley Davidson motorcycles. Bill truly loved his 95 years, spending his first overnight stay in a hospital on his 94th birthday due to a broken hip. Bill served his country as a member of the 101st Airborne 49th field artillery but never saw action, serving 44 months during the peacetime between WWII and Korea. Bill’s love for the American flag came from his proud service to his country. Bill will be missed but he believed that he would rejoin his family and friends who had gone before. A celebration of his life will be Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 2:00PM at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, with Dr. Tim Davis officiating. Visitation will be Saturday at 12:00 noon at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 156, Greenville, KY 42345. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.
