BLOOMINGTON – Vernon Lee Mefford, 76, passed into the arms of his Redeemer on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Indiana University Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana.
A long-time resident of Bloomington, he attended IU studying psychology and religion. In the early 1980’s, he established his business, Swings by Mefford, building porch swings, rocking chairs, and patio furniture made from red oak wood.
Vernon was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in January, 1966. He was admitted into the Medical Corpsman (Medic) Program. The Army transferred him to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he entered a 10-week training program. On August 13, 1966, he boarded a C-141 air command army aircraft dressed in full combat gear headed to the Republic of Vietnam. He returned home after one year and finished his military service at Fort Knox and was honorably discharged in January 1968.
Returning to his wife Bonnie, they were blessed to receive two wonderful sons, Mark in 1969 and Aaron in 1971.
Vernon is the ninth of eleven children born to Clint and Edith Mefford on September 18, 1946, in Ennis, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Billy, Glen, and Clint, Jr.; sisters, Mary, Barbara, Jean, and Wanda.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Mark (Laura) Mefford of Omah, Nebraska, and Aaron (Amy) Mefford of Omah, Nebraska; grandchildren, Sawyer, Gabriel, Abigail, Joseph, and Nicholas; brothers, Owen (Carol) Mefford of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Mike Mefford of Madisonville, Kentucky; and sister, Sharon (David) Mefford Topmiller of Central City.
Vernon’s funeral service will be Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 1:00PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Dr. Chase Thompson officiating. Burial is at Allens Chapel Cemetery in Ennis, Kentucky.
