DRAKESBORO – Margaret Nell Ewing Mefford passed peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father on March 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Beech Creek, KY, on September 7, 1924, to Ophas Ernest and Elizabeth Turner Ewing. Margaret was an active and devoted Christian and member of First Baptist Church Drakesboro where she faithfully served many years as Sunday School and Bible School teacher, deacon’s wife, seamstress and prayer warrior. She graduated from Hughes-Kirk High School in 1942 where she later taught business classes. After attending Murray State University she worked as a secretary and stenographer at Wright Field Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Near the end of WWII, after dating through the mail with army censored letters from New Guinea, she married the love of her life, Calvin Wesley Mefford when he returned from the Pacific in 1944. Margaret was an extremely talented lady with special gifts as a homemaker, loving wife and Mother of three. Her home was always open as the warm gathering place for special occasions and family celebrations where she shared her wonderful culinary skills. Her greatest joy was having the whole family gathered at her home for delicious meals, fellowship, and “Mefford Music”. She also served for eleven years as the first librarian of the Drakesboro City Library, where she trained student workers and held weekly story hours for children. Margaret’s rich legacy will always be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Surviors include her daughter Connie Neathamer, and her two sons and daughters in-law, Steve and Vicki Mefford and Billy and Angela Mefford, six grandchildren, Beth Mohon, Tom Neathamer, Crista and Kevin Briggs, Seth and Ashley Mefford, Ben and Leah Wright, Adam and Ashleigh Mefford, seven great-grandchildren, Hope Mohon, Keenan and Carmen Briggs, Easton and Layla Mefford, Meredith Wright and Wesley Mefford, nieces Allyson Ewing Green and Sally Ewing Clymer, loving friends Becky Neathamer and George Humphreys and her church family at First Baptist Church in Drakesboro.
