Jimmy Dewayne “JJ” Johnson, 68, went home to be with his Lord on August 25, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Gail Mayhugh Johnson for 47 years, and they made their home and raised a loving family in Bremen, Kentucky.

JJ was born on January 8, 1955 to Jimmy Dale and Emma Jean Edwards Johnson of Bremen. He graduated from Bremen High School in 1973. JJ worked as a coal miner and a car sales manager.

He served many youth as the Tae Kwon Do Master Instructor of Muhlenberg County. JJ attained the rank of 7^th degree black belt, first as a student then a teacher for the past fifty years. He was committed to sharing the message of Honor. Discipline. Respect.

Serving others was his devotion. Jim was known to knock on a door and volunteer to mow a yard. He loved landscaping and had beautiful flowerbeds which kept arrangements on many counters. Many yards were perfectly manicured thanks to JJ’s generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy Dale and Emma Jean Edwards Johnson of Bremen. Paternal grandparents were Att and Gertie Rager Johnson of Weir. Maternal grandparents, James Marion “Ted” and Eva Jean Oglesby Edwards, resided in Morehead.

Survivors include his wife Gail and three children: Leah (Shane) Kirkpatrick of Central City, Jarrod (Ashleigh) Johnson of Greenville, and Jenna (Chris) McGee of Central City. Precious grandchildren are Landry Johnson and Jack Johnson of Greenville. One sister, Shellie Johnson Stewart, also resides in Bremen. His nephew, Logan (Rhonda) Stewart, lives in Georgetown, Kentucky.

JJ was devoted to God and his church. He was a member and trustee of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church in Central City. He also served God and others through the Gideons.

JJ had a contagious laugh and loved to tease. His favorite past times included watching movies, family trips to the beach, spending time with his grandchildren and working in his yard.

Visitation hours are from 4:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, August 28^th at Tucker’s Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday, August 29^th at 11:00 am at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with Bro. Larry Shadowen officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.

Gail, so sorry to hear of your loss. So happy he has a place in heaven!

What a wonderful husband and father he was to his family. What a wonderful friend to the community and the students under his instruction. The world was a better place for him having been in it. Heaven has a gained a beautiful soul.

Christian started with Master Johnson last fall. We truly appreciated him giving the children Gideon Bibles and the lessons he taught.

I am out of the country and unable to attend the funeral but would like to send my condolences to Jim’s family. I became acquainted with the Johnson family in 1986. I thought highly of Jim (JJ) from that time. Over the years we became better acquainted and became good friends. We often had lunch together and long conversations about our lives. I can’t begin to tell you how much I thought that of him. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a person that had more positive influence over youth than he did. People flocked to him because they knew he cared and he always offered solid advice. He will be greatly missed but his influence will continue to be a strong force in the lives of many. Master Johnson was a loyal supporter of our Traditional Tae Kwon Chung do kwan association. My friend for over 50 years, I believe he showed us all how to live. I will miss him and never forget him.

This county has lost a great man and role model. He showed in his actions what a role model was. not only did he teach on Honor, Discipline and respect, he practiced it. He was not only a Taekwondo instructor he was a great man of God. He would teach the children to put God first, do what your mother and father says and show respect. I will be forever grateful for the teaching Karsen received from him and hope he never forgets what he instilled in him during class and outside of class. for the family. my heart hurts for all of you and pray for healing and comfort in your time of need. This breaks my heart as I know it does you and many others. We had such great fun times when we were younger in our 20's, just hanging out with friends, hunting and just general guy stuff. With a breaking heart I will be thinking of you as you lay JJ to rest.

It’s been many years since I’ve seen Jim! He was always a fair and straight up guy that everyone looked up to. I know he was loved by his family and friends dearly. I’m sure the world isn’t as bright today without him. My deepest condolences and prayers for his family.

My heartfelt prayers for Gail, the family, and all of JJ's students. JJ and I have known each other for most of our adult lives. We both grew up together in Tae Kwon Do under Grandmaster Choi, but JJ would tell you his relationship with Jesus was his greatest accomplishment. I will miss his big smile and wit. I'll see you again Brother, and when I do we can celebrate with the Lord.

Gail & Family, I have known JJ for nearly fifty years, first as a customer of Lester Motors in the seventies and later as a co-worker there. He was a caring, Godly man and friend. He was a great contributor to his church and his community, shaping many lives and his passing will leave a void in both. Pat and I send you our deepest and most sincere condolences.

Praying for each of you during these difficult times, days and months ahead. I lost my father exactly 4mo again on the 25th and only have peace through the Grace of God daily. I know His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Love and prayers!

Been with you for 13 years at Taekwondo. You have taught the kids so much. You was always there for us no matter what. Helpped us though some rough times. And we had alot of good times. We will miss you so much. And will always be there for Gail and kids. RIP now we got it here.
